London-based 21-year-old Nilüfer Yanya is officially introducing herself this week, with one of the most arresting, touching debuts of the year. New track ‘Small Crimes’ is a simple, yet devastatingly affecting soul/acoustic ditty - which gracefully showcases her mellifluous vocals and undeniable lyrical prowess. In the same week that Frank Ocean has delivered an album which revels (for the most part) in its simplicity, Nilüfer Yanya’s debut here operates in a similar manner. A well-executed, and interesting guitar line, is paired with Yanya’s gently delivered lyrics - and, really that’s all there is to it. That’s all she needs. For that reason alone, Nilüfer Yanya is one to keep a very firm eye on. -JC
